Handmade Rice Bag Heating Pad

The other day, my husband told me he wished he had “one of those rice bags.”  I had never heard of a rice bag heating pad, so I went in search of one.  While searching I found that they are actually very easy to make.

What you need:

  • A piece of cloth (mine was 18″ x 21″)
  • 3 lbs. rice
  • A needle and thread
  • Pins

I was lucky enough to have a piece of cloth on hand.  You can find pre-cut pieces at Walmart or craft stores that are very inexpensive.

If you live close to a WinCo, check out their Bulk Foods section.  I was able to get 3 pounds of rice for about $1.50.

If you have a sewing machine, this will go even quicker.  If you don’t have a sewing machine, don’t worry, this can still be done by hand.

You may want to iron your material, this would be a good time.  I didn’t take the time to do this, I figured the material will relax over time.

Fold your cloth in half, along the longest side, inside out.

Fold a flap along one edge and pin it.

Sew along the folded edge.  If sewing by hand, sew across and back to make sure it is secure.

Fold and pin the second side, leaving one of the short sides open.

Sew this side across and back.

Turn you bag right-side out.

Pour in your rice.

Fold and pin the final side.

Sew up the final side.

Your rice bag is now ready to heat and use.

Two or three minutes in the microwave should be plenty of time.  This will retain the heat for a nice long time.

A new heating pad for under $3.
